Match Report – Regional League vs Vale Vipers (6/11/16)

Team – Haafez Alimi, Kobe Aponesto, Tom Bamford (captain), Taylor Bowers, Ibrahim Chesshire, Christian Jerome, Bailey Kingscott, Miguel Leal, Adam Scott

1st Quarter – Saxons 11 Vipers 5
It was a tale of free throws in the 1st quarter with both teams going to the free throw line a combined 9 times in the first 10 minutes. Saxons made 3/8 at the FT line, and Vale made 2/10 at the FT line. Some great selfless offensive play from the Saxons with all 5 starters scoring in the opening quarter, and some intense defence limited Vale to only 5 points in the quarter. A strong opening quarter from the Saxons.

2nd Quarter – Saxons 32 Vipers 17
The Saxons strongest quarter (21-12) saw the players show confidence in transition offence, scoring at will, and showing the same selfless play by moving the ball well, resulting in high percentage shots. Great confidence from captain Tom Bamford who scored 11 points in the 2nd quarter (including 4/4 at the FT line). At the defensive end of the court, the Saxons were active and intense and held a solid lead going into halftime.

3rd Quarter – Saxons 42 Vipers 35
Saxons worst quarter losing it 10-18, as personal fouls lead to team fouls which lead to Vale scoring 6/11 from the FT line. Foul trouble was becoming Saxons Achilles heel with the level of defence dropping in standard. Saxons still managed to score 10 points and keep an 7 point lead going into what would be a very important final quarter.

4th Quarter – Saxons 58 Vipers 46
The focus and drive from Saxons on both ends of the court gave them the edge in the final quarter, winning it 16-11. If foul trouble was the problem for Saxons, it was converting free throws for Vale, making 5/12. Saxons gained confidence from the lead, and controlled the pace of the game on offence, driving the basket at will and making 4/8 free throws that kept Vale at bay, with the clock ticking down and against the away team. Great control and focus from Saxons in a key quarter.

Overall a competitive game from both teams and a great atmosphere resulting in a great game and a great result for the Saxons who now go to 3-1 (3 wins and 1 loss) in the regional league. A strong performance from every player, a great team performance overall, and a well-fought win for the Saxons.
