Saxons Run Out of Steam Against Cardiff City in National Cup

Final Score: Gloucester Saxons 56-81 Cardiff City

Sunday, September 17th, 2017 saw the Saxons play their 1st ever competitive Senior Men’s game at Gloucestershire College in the National Cup against Cardiff City.  After 4 minutes of the 1st quarter, Saxons were leading 7-5 after Marcus Pugh opened the scoring, followed by a 3 from Chris Lewis and another bucket from Pete Costello.

Cardiff finished the 1st quarter ahead by 2, with the score 17-15 to Cardiff. After 3 minutes of the 2nd quarter, the scores were tied at 21 apiece, with Caleb Hutchins having knocked down the 2nd 3 pointer for Saxons. Cardiff then began to pull away, with #22, P Liskosso making his presence felt, scoring 9 points in the quarter.

Cardiff went into half time with a 10 points lead and the scores at 38-28. The 1st 6 minutes of the 3rd period were pretty even, with Saxons managing to cut the lead to 9 points, 37-46 with 4 minutes to go, but a pair of threes from Cardiff stretched the lead out to 14 points, 53-39.  The last 3 minutes of the quarter saw Cardiff outscore the Saxons 5-2.

With one minute left in the quarter, Chris Lewis was disqualified after committing an unsportsmanlike foul. He had already notched up a pretty pointless Technical foul earlier in the quarter and not only had to leave the court, but also the venue.

Cardiff ended up by 18 points at the end of the 3rd quarter, with the scores at 59-41.

The 4th period saw the Saxons fall apart, not getting up and down the floor in transition and quitting team basketball at the offensive end. Cardiff won the 4th 22-15 and ended up winning by 24 points, with the final score 81-56.
